Should I start with Stage 1 Combiotic or PRE Combiotic for my newborn?

Both deliver the same probiotic cultures and Metafolin - the Combiotic advantages are identical. The only difference is starch. PRE Combiotic has no starch and a lighter, thinner consistency that mirrors breast milk most closely. Stage 1 Combiotic adds 1.0g of organic starch, making it creamier and more filling. If your baby seems satisfied on lighter formula, start with PRE. If they drain bottles and seem hungry quickly, Stage 1 is the better fit from day one.

What is the difference between Stage 1 Combiotic and Stage 1 Organic?

The macronutrient profile is nearly identical - same starch, similar DHA, same GOS prebiotics. Stage 1 Combiotic adds two things: live lactic acid cultures (Hereditum probiotics) and Metafolin in place of standard folic acid. For babies with healthy digestion and no specific gut concerns, Stage 1 Organic is excellent. If you want the additional gut and folate benefits, Stage 1 Combiotic is worth the premium.

Can I mix Stage 1 Combiotic with breast milk?

You can top up a breastfeed with formula in a separate bottle, but it is not recommended to mix formula powder directly into expressed breast milk. The ratio of formula to water must be precise for your baby to receive the correct nutrient concentration. Use formula and breast milk as separate feeds rather than combining them.

Why is the water temperature important for Combiotic formulas?

The live lactic acid cultures added to Combiotic formula are sensitive to high heat. Standard preparation guidelines recommend 70°C water to eliminate potential bacteria in formula powder. HiPP recommends 40-50°C for Combiotic to protect the live cultures. If you have concerns about bacterial safety, speak to your pediatrician who can advise on the safest preparation method for your baby's age and health status.

How long does one box last?

One 600g box makes approximately 44 bottles of 100ml. At the newborn stage with 60-90ml bottles and 6-8 feeds per day, a box lasts around 8-10 days. At 3-4 months with 150-180ml bottles, expect 6-7 days. Stocking up with a bundle is the most practical and cost-effective approach - our 12-box option is particularly popular with parents who want to reduce the per-box cost significantly.

When do I switch to Stage 2 Combiotic?

At around 6 months, when your baby begins eating solid foods, HiPP Stage 2 Combiotic is the appropriate next step. Stage 2 provides double the iron (1.0mg vs 0.60mg per 100ml) to compensate for the natural depletion of maternal iron stores that occurs at this age, plus higher calcium for growing bones - while keeping the same probiotic and Metafolin benefits you're used to.

Important: Breast milk is best for babies. HiPP Stage 1 Combiotic is suitable as a complete breast milk substitute or supplement from birth. Prepare with freshly boiled water cooled to 40-50°C to preserve live cultures. Always follow preparation instructions on the packaging. Consult your pediatrician before changing your baby's formula. Advantages

Pre- and probiotic combination is something no US formula offers at this level, DHA and ARA both included, baby accepted it without any adjustment period

Disadvantages

Price is premium, but after reading what goes into US newborn formulas, there was simply no comparison

My wife did weeks of formula research before our daughter was born and HiPP Stage 1 came out on top every time. The fact that the probiotics are actually derived from real human breast milk research is something you just don't see elsewhere. Three months in and our daughter is thriving, consistent digestion, steady weight gain, happy after every feed.

Advantages

Baby stayed full much longer than with the PRE stage, no gas or bloating, mixes smoothly and smells clean

Disadvantages

600g only lasts about 10 days in the first 6 weeks when feeds are around the clock, order two boxes at a time

We started on HiPP PRE but our son was hungry again 45 minutes after every feed. Switching to Stage 1 with the mild starch was the fix, he now goes 2.5 to 3 hours between feeds comfortably. Same clean ingredient list, same COMBIOTIK system, just a little more staying power. Couldn't be happier.
