Frequently Asked Questions
Should I start with HiPP PRE Organic or Stage 1 Organic?
Both are designed for newborns from birth - neither is "better." The difference comes down to your baby's appetite. If your baby seems satisfied after feeds and sleeps for reasonable stretches, PRE Organic with its starch-free, lighter composition is ideal. If your newborn drains every bottle and still seems hungry, Stage 1's added starch provides extra satiety. Many parents start with PRE and switch to Stage 1 if needed - or simply start with Stage 1 from day one if they prefer the creamier texture.
Can newborns digest starch from birth?
Yes. While newborns produce lower levels of amylase (the enzyme that digests starch), they are able to digest the small amount of starch in Stage 1 formula. HiPP uses a highly refined organic starch that is gentle and well-tolerated. Some very young or premature babies may show slightly more digestive sensitivity to starch in the first weeks - in these cases, PRE Organic is the safer starting point.
What is the difference between Stage 1 Organic and Stage 1 Combiotic?
The core formula is the same - both contain organic milk, DHA, ARA, GOS prebiotics, vitamins and minerals. HiPP Stage 1 Combiotic adds natural lactic acid cultures (live probiotic bacteria) that support gut health and immune development. Stage 1 Organic is the simpler formula without added bacterial cultures. For babies with normal digestion, either is an excellent choice. The Combiotic version is recommended for babies with a sensitive gut or family history of digestive issues.
How long does one box last?
One 600g box makes approximately 45 bottles of 100ml. In the early weeks at 60-90ml per feed with 6-8 feeds per day, a box lasts around 8-10 days. By 3-4 months with 150-180ml feeds, expect roughly 6-7 days per box. Our 8-box or 12-box bundles are the most popular choice for parents who want to stock up and reduce the per-box cost.
Is HiPP Stage 1 Organic soy-free and gluten-free?
Yes. HiPP Stage 1 Organic contains no soy, no gluten, no corn syrup, and no maltodextrin. It is also free from artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives. The allergens present are milk and fish (from the fish oil used as a DHA source).
When should I transition from Stage 1 to Stage 2?
At around 6 months, when your baby begins eating solid foods, HiPP Stage 2 Organic becomes the appropriate next formula. Stage 2 is formulated with significantly higher iron (1.0mg vs 0.60mg per 100ml) to compensate for the natural depletion of maternal iron stores that occurs after 6 months.
Important: Breast milk is best for babies. HiPP Stage 1 Organic is suitable as a complete breast milk substitute or supplement from birth. Always prepare formula with freshly boiled, cooled water (max. 50°C / 122°F) and follow the preparation instructions on the packaging. Consult your pediatrician before introducing formula.
